Jonathan Stout and his Campus Five, featuring Hilary Alexander is a septet dedicated to preserving the classic and often overlooked small group swing from the late 1930's and early 1940's. Founded by two dedicated swing dancers and vintage lifestyle enthusiasts, and using only the best of LA's jazz community, the Campus Five was a way to expose many dancers and listeners alike to some of the more interesting and under appreciated tunes from the swing era, while still being the most danceable band playing swing today. The Campus Five picks tunes from the books of notable small groups as the Benny Goodman Sextet, Count Basie's Kansas City Six/Seven, Artie Shaw and his Gramercy Five, as well as the small groups of Lester Young, Illinois Jacquet, Cootie Williams, Django Reinhardt, Duke Ellington, and Coleman Hawkins, and features vocal numbers from Ella Mae Morse, Anita O'Day, Peggy Lee and the young Ella Fitzgerald. |

Ben and Sheri are instructing our workshop the day of Swing Jam. Here's a little bit about them:
Since meeting in 1999, Ben and Sheri have danced, taught, and competed around the world. Known for their creative dancing and innovative choreography, Ben and Sheri consistently receive top placements in national and international competitions. They are especially proud of their 2005 National Jitterbug Championships "Golden Budgie" Award, an award given out annually to the person or couple best exhibiting the true spirit of Jitterbug. It is with this spirit Ben and Sheri bring their unique brand of energy, humor, and positive attitude to their classes and to the swing dance community.

The Lindy Club would like to thank Sam for coming out every single Saturday to co-teach the Intermediate Lindy Lessons with Sara Gershfeld. Despite his dedication to teaching the club members, he always comes full of energy, insight, and is always fun. Thank you to Jasmine for filling in for Sara while she was out of town. We could not have made the club what it is today without the both of you!
SAM Sam picked up swing dancing in 2003 and quickly became addicted! His inspirations are Skye Humphries, Max Pitruzzella, Mikey Pedroza, and Peter Strom. Sam has competed and placed in a number of local Jack & Jill and Strictly Lindy contests, and placed 1st in the Amateur Jack & Jill contest at the Connexxion 2007. Sam is a current team member of Ben and Sheri's One2Swing Jitterbugs, and Carol Fraser and Debbie Gitt's award winning team, Super-Cali-Lindy-Licious. Sam loves Vanilla Chai's "just right", always has the coolest gadgets on him, has super snazzy green shoes, and loves Jonathan Stout's Minor Swing rendition. Basically, he's just the coolest cat around.
JASMINE Jasmine took up swing dancing because the music was just too fun not to dance to. While at UCLA, she headed the swing club, where she taught lessons and ran the dance team. More recently, she has helped teach studio and club lessons in the Los Angeles area. She is currently part of the One2Swing Jitterbugs, who just won 1st place in Kollaboration 2008, Jasmine also performs with the OC Swing Team and is a former member of the award winning Super-Cali-Lindy-Licious. Jasmine always has style and grace on the dance floor. If you see her twirlin', go ask her to dance. She always has a huge smile on her face! |
